Homemade Printable Games

Blog posts have been written here covering each of the game types that I use at this time. All of these games use rules from sources that have a long history of fun. And every new game I learn seems to be a twist on an old one.

Each game we play we look for information to earn points; pairs, sets, categories, or sequences. When you learn a new game think about 'what you are searching for' or 'how you earn points.' Look for fun, simple rules that you could use with the information (pairs, sets, categories, or sequences) that your kids need to memorize.

I encourage you to use this ancient tool to help your kids memorize information.

Category Train Card Games – DIY Homeschool

I only have one Category Train game for sale at this time, in July 2013, but all of the games that use categories could use these rules. No additional parts needed, just the key and the cards with these rules.

Here are the rules you can use to create your own printable game.

Category Train Card Game rules for your DIY printable game.

Just like the other games, I suggest creating your key first, then making the game cards using it as a reference.

The MatchIt Card Game, Stephanie's Spinner Card Game, and this Category Train Card Game can use the same game cards.

Phonics rules work well with categories, but I also have a Vertebrates MatchIt Card Game, a Color and Shape early learning game, a Five Senses Card Game and a Parts of Speech Card Game, that use categories of information.

Stephanie's Spinner Card Game for Sets – DIY Homeschool

The rules for Stephanie's Spinner Card Games are not interchangeable. Last week I told about the game for categories, this week I am talking about sets. Below you can see the rules for Stephanie's Spinner Card Game for Sets:

Rules for Stephanie's Spinner Card Game for sets.

This game can be played with most card games that use sets, like GoFish. Players collect complete sets and win with the most complete sets.

Ideas for printable games that use sets:

  • Early Learning – Letters, include:
  •              one “F”, one “f”, one {Image of a fox}
  • Early Learning – Number words, include:
  •              one numeral (3), one number word (three), and one image (three pennies)
  • Language – Prefix word study include:
  •              one prefix (re-), one meaning (again), and one sample (redo)
  • Phonics – short vowels, include:
  •              one manuscript vowel (manuscript “e”), one cursive vowel (“e”), one word (egg), and                                                                                                                 one image (image of an egg)

I like to use 5-10 sets, with 3-5 members in each for my games.

This game uses a spinner. I think spinners add entertainment value to a game if they work. I never could get homemade spinners to work well in my classroom... I found a clear plastic spinner that can lay on top of my printed spinner and it WORKS. Yeah! I don't sell them but I give them away, with a purchase. ($25  purchased through Resources4teaching, then write me  chris@teachwithgames.com, while supplies last)  You may be able to find them in a teacher supply store.

Stephanie's Spinner Card Game for Categories – DIY Homeschool

I have two “Stephanie's Spinner Card Games” one for Categories of Information and one for Sets of Information. The rules are not exchangeable.

Sets have a specific number of members and categories can have an undisclosed number of members. For example:

Sets:

One complete set in Phonics – {an image of} an apple

                                               “A”

                                               “a”

One complete set in Math - {an image of} five items

                                          “5”

                                          “V”

                                          "five"

Categories:

One category in Phonics – words that have a short 'a'

One category in Math - multiples of 5

Categories are never 'complete.'

When I create a game, I start with filling out my answer key. Then, fill out the game cards using the key. I have a free template for game cards (plus a bunch of free printable games) on teachwithgames.com, for members...

moreorlessrulestokens_key   PDF with these rules (full size) is available to our members at teachwithgames.com

This is a free membership with your email ( I send out updates less than four times a year and do not sell your information)

Referring to an answer key will help players memorize the information. It will slow down the game and they will usually need it less and less. Reading it aloud will help everyone memorize it.

We sell several More or Less Card Games on Currclick for $1 each including one I will talk about Friday using Roman Numerals.
